Why is taking the Algebra 1 Skills Test a good idea?

While taking a test is never (or, at least, rarely) fun, it’s important to know whether a student is ready for Algebra 1 because it can help them avoid frustration and failure in the future.

Up until high school students are moved from one level of math to the next because they move to the next grade. Teachers don’t generally, give students a test to determine which skills (from previous years) they need to review. Also, grades in high school are more closely aligned to whether or not a student understands the content of the class compared to middle school where effort might play a greater role in grading.

So, talk to your kiddo about the importance of taking this short test. If they ace it…great! However, if the test identifies some skills that they need to review before starting Algebra 1, you (and they) will know and have time to build up their skills before moving on to more challenging coursework.

We have provided two versions of the test. The short test (10 questions) will give you an idea of whether your kiddo knows the material, but the long test (30 questions) will give you a better understanding of how well they know it. Good luck on the test and in Algebra 1.

The short test has 10 questions and should take about 15 minutes.

The long test has 30 questions and should take about 45 minutes.
